There is both good stress and bad stress for the human body. Good stress might be exercise that is done daily that makes your muscles work and your cardiovascular system stay on top. That’s all well and good, few would disagree that exercise is a smart thing to do. Studies and research show that people who walk 3 miles a day will live 10 years longer and healthier during those 10 years. People who work out at a moderate level also find that their immune systems are better and they get sick less.
Of course, there is another kind of stress, one that plagues the central nervous system of the body. It is caused from worrying about things that are not in your control. Currently due to the economic crisis that plagues our nation we find stress levels at an all-time high. In fact, they are 50% higher than normal across the nation and in states like California, Michigan, and South Carolina which are the most stressful states they are 15% higher than the other states.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or university researcher to figure out why, it’s fairly obvious. The increased job losses, and the fear of losing one’s job are amongst the reasons for the highest personal stress, and this is not the good kind of stress. Also, Increased Taxes, Small Business Losses, and negative economic news on TV is causing people to worry more, as if they didn’t have enough things to worry about already.
State Government budget cuts are causing havoc and in California they are now offering vouchers rather than actual money when the state pays their bills. To top it all off most people’s largest investment, their homes, has lost their value, and has dropped off by at least 40%. This is definitely a good time for folks that live in these high stress areas to think about chilling out, and even considering some stress management techniques. Please consider all this.
